What is a smart lens?

Smart Lens is known as the trifocal lens, this description is a truer term than the smart lens. A smart lens is an artificial trifocal lens is implanted into the eye during a cataract operation. A cataract is the became blurred of the natural lens in time or due to some different reasons that I have explained in the subject of cataract. Normally, in a young person's or a healthy eye's lens can see all ranges like far-middle-near. The function of our lenses begins to decrease with increasing age. The main aim of cataract surgery is implanting a new artificial lens instead of a natural blurred lens.

Why do we need Smart Lenses?

When the blurred lens is dislodged, this eye will need a new lens. If we do not implant a new lens, the patient needs to use glasses. For this reason, we implant a new lens in every cataract surgery.

We decide what kind of lens we will use with the patients by taking into consideration the patient's medical conditions. There should be the best decision all the time, the lens that has similar functions to the natural lens. And Trifocal lenses are the best similar lenses to our natural lenses.

Trifocal GIL implants provide great comfort for patients and eliminate all vision problems along with life. Trifocal GILs are suitable for young patients who are not suitable for laser surgery, have low vision quality, and use glasses with high numbers, who do not want to use glasses.

Who is not suitable for smart lenses?

• Before making a decision about surgery, the general health state of the patient and all details about the patient's eye system should be analyzed.
• Patients who are not suitable for smart lenses can be defined as follows;
• Who have macular degeneration
• Who have vessel damage reasoned to diabetes or other different causes
• Who have strabismus due to amblyopia
• Who have the shape of cornea's deformed a high range
• Who have uncontrollable glaucoma
• Changing the lens process is possible after intraocular pressure is returned to normal measures and took under the control.

How many types of smart lens are there?

During the cataract surgery, one of the smart lens types are use. These types are Monofocal, Multifocal and Trifocal Lenses. Monofocal Lens is provide to seeing far distance only and you need to use eyeglasses for seeing near distances. Multifocal Lenses have far and near distances, but it is not provide a solution for astigmatic. And the patient who has astigmatic may have feeling of emptiness when watching TV or come down a ladder.

Trifocal Lenses are provide to seeing all distances without eyeglasses. When the lens is moved to more close distance, dazzled will be increase in the evenings. First times , the patients may be disturb, but the eyes will be used to this dazzled in time.

This problem may be continue for some sensitive patients albeit rarely ever. For this reason, new generation lenses that provide to seeing as from 60 cm distance and no have dazzled  should used.

In addition, before the operation, if the patient has a significant astigmatic defect, astigmatic qualification is added to all these lenses and one of smart lens types are applied, according to the patient's request and the physician's examination result.

What are the types of smart lenses?

Trifocal lenses are the newest type of smart lenses. Trifocal lenses provide clear vision for farsighted, medium (astigmatic),and nearsighted. Near distance around 30-80 cm could be seen easily. The toric lens is applied if the astigmatic defect is determined before the operation.

The vision of a smart lens is moved how much nearer distance, feeling of seeing brightness around the light is increase. Also, there are different types of lenses that are known as AddOn Lenses, too. These lenses for the eyes that applied monofocal lenses many years ago.  If the patient has a monofocal lens for myopic and, now hypermetropic defection is consisted too and wanted to dispose of eyeglasses, AddOne Lens could be applied.

There are smart lenses with different features depending on the brands of the lenses. I use American made smart lenses that have FDA approval in my clinic. I never even offer the lenses produced in the countries that we can call the 3rd world countries or the newly produced lenses that we do not have experience, even as suggestions for the use of patients in our clinic.

Planning and Appointment Before the Surgery

Preoperative planning is important in as much as smart lens surgery. As well, this planning is more important from the surgery. Because the calculation of the smart lenses differs from the other lenses. And also smart lenses can not be applied to every patient.

Smart Lens Surgery is applied under the sterile conditions in the operation rooms. Each eye is operationalized about 10 minutes on different days. The eyes are anesthetized with anesthetic  drop process.

General anesthesia, sedation or hospitalization is not required.There is not  feeling of pain due to operation area has not vessels and nerves. And therefore, this surgery is a painless operation.

The blurred lens is cleaned with a phacoemulsification technique that uses ultrasound energy by entering the eyes from quite small lacerations.

The smart lens is applied instead of the natural lens and these smart lenses can not be removed like a contact lens. Bandaging is not necessary after the surgery, but closing the eye is suggested with cotton rondel first day.

After the smart lens surgery, bed rest is not necessary and the patient can continue routine life provided that using all medications regularly from the second day. The eye's vision gets better day by day. The same procedure is applied to the other eye within a few days.

What are the complaints after the Smart Lens Surgery?

The calculation of lens is done from out of the eye and then this lens is applied to the eye. The stability of the position of the placed lens in the eye is of great importance for the patient to see after the surgery.

The vision may not be up to the mark due to a deviation of mm during the smart lens surgery. And the opened to small lacerations that on the eyes are recover in two weeks. After the operation, eye numbers can vary from person to person. While eye numbers in the range of 0.25-0.50 do not bother the person, when higher numbers remain, the person will not be comfortable with three-focus lenses.

Especially when the driving in the evenings, there can be some complaints such as dazzled and feeling of seeing brightness around the light. The vision of a smart lens is moved how much nearer distance, feeling of seeing brightness around the light is increase, but the eyes will be used to this dazzled in 2-6 months.

Cataract and Smart Lens

The main principle of cataract surgery is implanting a new artificial lens instead of a natural blurred lens. The natural lens is not standard for every person while natural all lenses have approximately 22-23 numbers. When the blurred lens is dislodged, this eye will need a new lens. If we do not implant a new lens, the patient needs to use glasses. For this reason, we implant a new lens in every cataract surgery.

Getting information should be taken about lens quality, for how many years applied these lenses, experience of the doctor and operating rooms and hospitals conditions.
